That marking tells the trained reader exactly what the equipment is certified for: what zone it can be installed in, what gas group it is suitable for, and what its maximum surface temperature is. It is the primary document for verifying that the right equipment is in the right place.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In practice, the marking is frequently not read or not understood. Equipment is installed because it was &#8220;suitable for Zone 1&#8221;, but the marking string contains far more specific information than zone suitability, and the details beyond the zone classification are the details that most commonly generate mismatches in field installations.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>The full Ex marking: decoded segment by segment<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>A complete IECEx marking for a typical piece of equipment in a gas Zone 1 application might read: <strong>[Ex] II 2G Ex d IIB T4 Gb<\/strong>. Here is what each segment tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n<table class=\"spec-table\">\n<tr><th>Segment<\/th><th>Meaning<\/th><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">[Ex]<\/td><td>IECEx conformity symbol. Confirms the equipment is certified under the IECEx scheme.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">II<\/td><td>Equipment Group II covers surface industries (not mining). Group I = mines with methane risk.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">2G<\/td><td>Category 2, Gas. Category 1 = Zone 0\/20; Category 2 = Zone 1\/21; Category 3 = Zone 2\/22. G = gas; D = dust.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">Ex d<\/td><td>Protection concept: flameproof enclosure. The enclosure can contain an internal ignition without transmitting flame to the surrounding atmosphere.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">IIB<\/td><td>Gas group: IIA (propane), IIB (ethylene), IIC (hydrogen\/acetylene). IIB covers IIA; IIC covers all.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">T4<\/td><td>Temperature class with maximum surface temperature of 135\u00b0C. Must be \u2264 the ignition temperature of the gas minus safety margin.<\/td><\/tr>\n<tr><td class=\"seg\">Gb<\/td><td>Equipment Protection Level: Ga = Zone 0; Gb = Zone 1; Gc = Zone 2.<\/td><\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n<h2>The three details that generate the most mismatches in practice<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"sources\">\n<div class=\"src-card\">\n<span class=\"src-icon\">\u2697\ufe0f<\/span>\n<div class=\"src-title\">Gas group mismatch<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-desc\">A facility handling hydrogen-rich process streams is classified as a Group IIC environment. Equipment marked IIB is certified for ethylene atmospheres and provides a lower level of protection than IIC requires. Installing IIB equipment in an IIC zone is a certification violation, invisible at installation and apparent only when the marking is checked against the zone classification document.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-card\">\n<span class=\"src-icon\">\ud83c\udf21\ufe0f<\/span>\n<div class=\"src-title\">Temperature class mismatch<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-desc\">The T-class defines the maximum surface temperature the equipment&#8217;s external surfaces can reach. For a zone where the process gas has a low auto-ignition temperature, such as carbon disulfide with an AIT of 90\u00b0C, equipment rated T4 (135\u00b0C maximum) is not suitable. T-class must be selected against the lowest auto-ignition temperature of any gas that could be present.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-card\">\n<span class=\"src-icon\">\ud83d\udccb<\/span>\n<div class=\"src-title\">Category vs actual zone<\/div>\n<div class=\"src-desc\">Category 2G equipment is certified for Zone 1 installations. Category 3G equipment is only certified for Zone 2. Installing Category 3G equipment in a Zone 1 area is an error because the equipment is not certified for the level of hazard present.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"callout\"><p>The marking on a piece of Ex equipment is not a generic &#8220;this is safe for hazardous areas&#8221; declaration. It is a specific technical statement.
