Hazardous Area Classification

Zone Classification — Gas & Dust

Understanding which zone your equipment operates in determines the inspection frequency, protection concept required, and Ex marking needed.

Flammable Gas & Vapour (Group II)
Zone 0 — Continuously Present
Explosive atmosphere present continuously, or for long periods. Rare indoors — typically inside storage tanks, process vessels.
Zone 1 — Likely During Normal Operation
Explosive atmosphere likely to occur during normal operation. Typical for process plant areas, around flanges and valves.
Zone 2 — Unlikely / Infrequent
Explosive atmosphere not likely to occur in normal operation but may do so infrequently. Pump rooms, compressor areas.
Combustible Dust (Group III)
Zone 20 — Continuously Present
Cloud of flammable dust present continuously or for long periods in the air. Typically inside dust containers and silos.
Zone 21 — Likely During Normal Operation
Cloud of flammable dust likely to occur during normal operations — areas around loading/unloading stations.
Zone 22 — Unlikely / Infrequent
Cloud of flammable dust not likely to occur in normal operations but may occur infrequently and for short periods.
